Can you live on rum alone?
The Rum Diary is brought to the big screen from the book of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson, in which this famous journalist and writer behind the pseudonym of Paul Kemp, describes his experiences during the period he lived in Puerto Rico. Kemp, played by Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary, is tired and sick of life in New York, and American society in general during the end of the Eisenhower years. So he moves to this beautiful Caribbean island to work in a small local newspaper.
The work doesn't take away time to pursue his favourite hobby, which is explained by the title of The Rum Diary: immersed in this liquor as long as possible, without any other ambitions than to spend all day drunk. Something changes when he meets the fascinating Chenault (Amber Heard, who can be seen alongside Johnny Depp in the wallpaper of The Rum Diary that's offered here).
Chenault not only falls in love with Kemp with his wild beauty, but also introduces him to her social circle, where he meets Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart), a shady businessman involved in real estate matters that are suspect, and who also happens to be Chenault's boyfriend, who will ask Kemp to write an article eulogising his business.
